Tallahassee - St Marks Rail to Trails Bike Ride Oct 27-30, 2006 Head of Trail, Melvin & bike Trail Debbie on Trail Debbie St Marks, FL End of Trail Where we ate Fla St. Capital Debbie's Birthday was Oct 28th and we celebrated by burning a few of our free motel stays by going to Tallahassee, Florida for the weekend. We drove to Thomasville, Ga on Friday because all the motels in Tallahassee were filled by ( FAMU - Florida A & M University ) fans and FAMU playing football on Saturday. On Saturday we drove to St Marks Florida located 20 miles south of Tallahassee where the Bike Trail starts. We rode the 22 mile trail for about 16 miles non stop in about 80 minutes. The main trailhead located 4 miles south of Tallahassee ( sign above )is really nice with up to date bathroom facilities. We made the round trip including a break in 3 hours. We finished about 2 pm. We started back to Thomasville to spend the night - but on the way we stopped at Savannah's Buffet ( photo above ) which had really good fried chicken breasts. St Marks is a small fisherman's town located on the back water of the Gulf of Mexico. Last photo is the Supreme court building for the State of Florida. 70 miles in two days riding our bikes - really good exercise and a way to see the countryside. The trail was relatively flat to gently up hill going from St Marks toward Tallahassee - the biggest problem we had was the wind - a 15 mph Northwest wind nearly directly in our faces as we rode north - but what a help on our way back to St Marks. |
